The Feynman Technique

I recently came across a method called Feynman technique, which is used to effectively learn and understand a topic.

Why I mention this here is because even if I was not familiar with this method before, in practice the reason why I started this blog was to implement the Feynman technique. Sometimes it just happens that you know something, but when you hear someone else explain it, you realize for the first what it really is that you know. That realization helps one to implement the knowledge in real life in a consistent and logical manner that produces results.

So... The Feynman technique.

  1. Pick a topic you want to know well and explain it to someone else (or write an essay about it). Your explanation should be as simple and easy to understand as possible.
  2. This will help you realize where you have gaps in your knowledge about that specific topic. Study more about the relevant parts to fill those gaps until there are no gaps.
  3. Write new explanation that truly is easy to understand. If you are unable to do this, you still do not understand the topic well enough. Repeat until the explanation is good enough.

Only when you can explain a topic in simple language, you have truly understood it.
